You’ve no doubt heard about the recommendation from this week’s meeting of the National Transportation Safety Board. If not, here’s a recap of what came out of their discussions about a 2010 wreck involving two school buses, a bob tail and a tractor trailer.
* Ban the nonemergency use of portable electronic devices (other than those designed to support the driving task) for all drivers;
* Use the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration model of high visibility enforcement to support these bans; and
* Implement targeted communication campaigns to inform motorists of the new law and enforcement, and to warn them of the dangers of texting and phone use while driving.
These recommendations started a rollercoaster of reactions; but NTSB is sticking by its guns, saying: “No call, no text, no update is worth a human life.”
According to an NTSB tweet, a Q&A fact sheet is being created and will be published on the NTSB website soon. The NTSB says it is seeking to make highways safer for the general public and commercial truck drivers. What do you think about this recommendation?
